When it comes to feel-good shows for the summer, it doesn’t get much better than Netflix’s Love on the Spectrum. It’s a reality TV dating show that focuses solely on people who are on the autism spectrum. Each episode highlights one or two different singles and, in two cases, couples, and their journey to find love. Given that those on the spectrum have difficulty in social situations, dating is pretty challenging. But like everyone else, they crave social connections and ultimately love. While Netflix picked up the streaming rights for this series, it actually originally hails from Australia. It was produced by Northern Pictures for ABC a national public network in Australia, not the American network of the same name and aired on that network back in Consisting of five episodes in season one, the show was filmed entirely in Australia and so all participants are Australian. The creator of the series, Cian O’Clery, actually got the idea and inspiration for Love on the Spectrum from doing other shows about people with disabilities.

Quarantine has given students ample time to catch up on unfinished projects, books, and most notably, TV shows. People enjoy a sweet story where two strangers fall in love, even if the conditions in which it happens are completely fantastical. Generally, we understand that while many couples on dating shows will not stay together, watching them get together and seeing the drama that unravels along the way is still entertaining.
Blind Date, the world’s greatest dating show, is coming to Australia in and Julia Morris is stepping into the role of mischievous.
What followed those quickie proposals was the real grim meat of the series, just darkly comical enough to rescue the show from outright tragedy. It was a big hit, giving everyone something to chatter about as a disappointing season of The Bachelor wound down. That was ages ago, though. Naturally, there is a catch : an Alexa-style virtual assistant device, called Lana, informs the sexies that they have to refrain from any kind of sexual activity.
This is to be a carnal-free environment, if these young hardbodies can, well, handle it. The motive for this twist is, ostensibly, therapeutic. Thus, Lana the robot is trying to encourage them to learn how to get to know a person for something beyond mere sexual opportunity. Its eight episodes stumble by, and then the series is done like it never even started. This may sound silly, and rather obvious, to say about a show like this, but Too Hot to Handle is terrible—shoddily made and deeply uninteresting.
The contestants are all bores, all clearly out to boost their influencer clout, and are awful at the game of reality show pretending. The no-physical-intimacy rule is routinely broken, producer meddling being the only conceivable explanation. That calculation is often sadly right, but Too Hot to Handle carries that presumption too far.

A t first glance, Love on the Spectrum Netflix appears to be an Australian version of The Undateables, without the crude name, and specific to following the dating lives of people on the autism spectrum. While I continue to love The Undateables, this five-part newcomer feels more of its moment, taking the time to explore the lives of its participants in greater depth, which results in a programme filled with joy, warmth and insight.
It is frequently very funny, but crucially, that is never at the expense of anyone on camera. Looking for love can be complicated and absurd for anyone, and the programme highlights some of the pitfalls. He frequently amuses his family because of his bluntness.

Many of the participants have never dated before, while others—like Episode 1’s Ruth and Thomas—let cameras in on their long term relationships. The four-part series is directed and created by Cian O’Clery, who arrived at the idea while working on another documentary series: Employable Me , which follows six people with disabilities on their journey to find jobs. Cian added that he kept encountering the misconception that people with autism are not interested in romance, though, from his experience, “this simply isn’t true.
Indeed, the hundreds of people who applied to be on Season 1 prove the misconception false, and for any one interested in heading Down Under to apply for Season 2, casting appears to be open.
